A few hundred students and their families packed into the Kent-Meridian High School cafeteria on June 12 to celebrate their high school graduation. Students from Kent-Meridian, Kentwood and Kentridge were all part of our College Success Foundation Achievers program in their schools.
For the last two years, these CSF Scholars have been earnestly preparing for college. They toured college campuses; applied for college admissions, scholarships and financial aid; and learned what to expect and how to be prepared. Many of the scholars will be the first in their family to attend college.
A family-style dinner was served as the guests arrived and settled in. Extended family and friends enjoyed the warm summer evening and easy familiarity.
One scholar was selected from each of the schools to speak. Each of them talked about the invaluable support and direction they received from their CSF advisors.
Fatimah from Kentwood said CSF guided her on the right pathway and gave her a sense of belonging in higher education and with fellow CSF Scholars.
Miriame from Kent-Meridian talked about CSF’s impact on her. “There is no K-M without CSF,” she said. ”People told me that if I went to this school, I would never become the person I am today…That I would never find a community like CSF at this school. They were wrong!”
Ezekiel from Kentridge shared how he is looking forward to attending college and pursuing his dreams.
The excitement in the air was palpable. Little brothers and sisters watched in awe as their older siblings were honored with their CSF cords. Scholars had fun posing in the photo booth with each other, their families, College Prep Advisors, HERO Advisors and extended CSF family. College reps were also on hand to welcome the students and answer final questions they might have about registration and what to expect when they arrive on campus.
As each of these CSF Scholars graduated high school just three days later, they were excited to continue on to college, proud of their accomplishments and confident in their futures knowing that CSF will be there for them in college and beyond.
